Do Theodores have any health issues?

All dog breeds have the potential to develop health issues, with certain conditions being more prevalent in specific or mixed breeds. Theodore Breeders are striving to create a new breed devoid of inheritable diseases through meticulous selective breeding.

Cavoodles often encounter issues like Patellar Luxation and Mitral Valve Dysplasia. Patellar Luxation occurs when the thigh muscles pull the shin bone abnormally, a condition more common in smaller breeds, leading to the wearing down of the femur and potential dislocation of the patella.

Mitral Valve Dysplasia, a condition where the mitral valve weakens, leads to heart problems such as murmurs and can progress to congestive heart failure, especially in smaller dogs.

Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced high-quality diet, and ample exercise can contribute to your Theodores overall health. Nonetheless, crossbred dogs may inherit certain disease predispositions based on their genetic makeup, breed, and size.

There's a Bear in There Breeding Advantage.

Parent dogs are carefully assessed and must pass through a rigorous selection process which involves Genetic Testing, Veterinary Health checks and visual assessment to check for conformation (appearance and physical formation), coat and condition.

I only breed dogs that are in excellent health.

There are a number of genetically inheritable diseases that Cavoodles (King Charles Cavalier Spaniel X Toy/Mimi Poodle) are prone to, including:

  • Congenital Macrothrombocytopaenia

  • Curly Coat Dry Eye Syndrome

  • Degenerative Myelopathy

  • Elliptocytosis B-Spectrin

  • Episodic Falling Syndrome

  • Exercise Induced Collapse

  • Neonatal Encephalopathy

  • Osteochondrodysplastia

  • Prekallikrein Deficiency

  • Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration

  • rcd4-PRA (late onset)

  • von Willebrand's Disease Type III

Visual Assessment

Dogs in my breeding program are Genetically screened though Orivet and Dog Breeding Science and results can be viewed on request. Parent dogs are carefully matched to ensure puppies are healthy and will not be affected by any of the genetic diseases listed above.

Patellar Luxation is a common joint issue in small dogs. In this condition the thigh muscles pull the shin bone abnormally, leading to the wearing down of the femur and potential dislocation of the patella.

My parent dogs are tested for Patella Subluxation and are cleared for any abnormality

Mitral Valve Dysplasia is the most common cardiac illness in dogs constituting 75% of all cardiac diseases. MMVD is a progressive heart condition where the mitral valve weakens, leads to heart problems such as murmurs and can progress to congestive heart failure, especially in smaller dogs.

Recent genetic research has identified the 'causative' mutation-NEBL3 and this mutation can be used as a marker to indicate the risk level of developing this disease.

Research is ongoing but all dogs in the Theodore Breed in Development program are tested for MMVD with the goal to produce puppies that have reduced risk markers.
