Puppy Scams are on the Rise in Australia
Sophisticated puppy scams are leaving Australians heartbroken and out of pocket as buying puppies online becomes increasingly common and online advertisements are unregulated.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Authority Commission (ACCC) has claimed that Australians lost an astounding $4.2 million to puppy scammers in 2021—an increase of 1000% since 2019—due to the alarming growth in dishonest and sophisticated online puppy scams.
Beware of Puppy Scams
What are Puppy Scams?
In order to fraudulently take advantage of Australians looking for a pet, puppy scammers post fake ads online for puppies that don't exist and frequently accept payments from several buyers for the same dog.
Cavoodles and other poodle breeds are the most commonly used in these fake listings.
These ads often appear on fake websites or online classifieds, with scammers impersonating businesses and stealing ABNs to establish up websites.
These types of scams have a significant financial and emotional impact on those who have been scammed, with claims of individual losses of up to $25,000.
